"You and Me and Yellow and Blue"
SHIDO's yellow, born from the soil of Awaji Island. Indigo blue, born from the soil of the same island.
Although yellow and blue share the same land and soil as their point of origin, they emerge with distinct qualities, standing in contrast to one another.
ndigo dyeing flourished in Japan during the Edo period, becoming deeply rooted in the everyday lives of ordinary people. From the Meiji period onward, the introduction of synthetic indigo made mass production and lower-cost dyeing possible. In an age that increasingly valued efficiency and uniformity, color came to be produced faster, more cheaply, and in greater quantities.
In recent years, however, growing awareness of the finite nature of the Earth's resources has led to a renewed appreciation of environmentally conscious methods from an earlier era, including the cultivation of plants for color and the use of fermentation in the dyeing process. Practices once considered outdated are now taking on new significance.
Things acquire different meanings and values as times change and as they are viewed by different people. Through paintings, sculptural works, and installations incorporating contrasting motifs and optical illusions, this exhibition invites us to reconsider how we perceive the world, where we stand within it, and how we form our understanding of it.
Junichi Okada
Junichi Okada was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1980. Based in Sumoto on Awaji Island, Hyogo, the artist currently works across painting and indigo dyeing.
During a three-year stay in New York beginning in 2005, the artist encountered a wide range of artistic practices, particularly street art and Pop Art. Fascinated by the constantly evolving forms of expression found there, the artist began creating work independently. After working as a web designer, the artist established the indigo dyeing studio AiAii in 2020. Following several years of creating hand-dyed works, the artist began painting with indigo pigment around 2023.
Today, the artist grows and ferments his own indigo leaves in Sumoto and produces hand-dyed works at the AiAii studio. Pigment is also extracted from the leaves of the indigo plants grown there and made into paint for use in painting.
Guided instinctively by sensory information that cannot be fully expressed in words, the artist turns inward and takes feelings of dissonance with society as a point of departure. Through the use of lines, the work creates an unbalanced world that is subtly displaced from its expected form.
